Sterling Friendship Award

Michael Madden

Michael Madden

Michael Madden's low-key manner belies a lifetime of accomplishment and service to others.

During his 41 years as director, he has shaped the Schaumburg Township District Library into a national model, while helping his wife rear seven children, six of them adopted.  After working as a Chicago teacher and librarian and on staff at the American Library Association, he became director of the then semi-rural Schaumburg Township District Library in 1967.

Under Madden's leadership, the library has forged close connections with Friendship Village, which functions almost as a branch. Residents have enjoyed a constant flow of materials, even after the new main library opened just two blocks away in 1998.

Though Madden plans to retire this December, he expects to stay occupied with an online business, selling items purchased at estate sales.  Recognizing his mentorship of so many area librarians, Madden received the Illinois Library Association's Librarian of the Year Award in 1998 and the North Suburban Library Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. He is a long-time member of the Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates Rotary Club.
